As we wrap up another successful year of the Walking Softer Education Program, we want to highlight some of the hard work and impact of our 2025-2026 participants.

Throughout the year, participating groups across the country explored sustainability issues, developed leadership skills, and implemented projects that created meaningful impacts in their communities. One of those groups was the Sembrando Cambios Youth Ambassadors Program at CRECE Urban Farms. Through their participation in the Walking Softer Education Program, students combined hands-on farming experience with sustainability education, ultimately designing and implementing a community farm-to-table luncheon that welcomed family and other community members.

Students led in nearly every aspect of the event. They prepared and served a meal featuring six menu items made with ingredients grown on the farm, welcomed 30 guests, guided visitors on farm tours, presented on their individual sub-projects, and facilitated conversations about food sovereignty, sustainability, and composting. In keeping with the event's sustainability focus, food scraps generated during meal preparation were composted on-site, and leftover food was taken home.

Beyond the project itself, one of the most rewarding outcomes was seeing students grow in confidence as leaders and educators, which they demonstrated through their enthusiasm, professionalism, and initiative. Their Community Engagement Coordinator, Jessy Reyes, noted:

"Youth Ambassadors successfully presented their projects with confidence and enthusiasm and facilitated farm tours all on their own! On top of that, they were able to take initiative with small projects inside the farm, regardless of their own projects."

The event not only celebrated the culmination of their time in the program but also showcased the lasting skills and knowledge that the students have developed, which will continue to empower them in their future endeavors. Reflecting on how the experience will shape their future, one Youth Ambassador shared:

"Throughout my time as a Youth Ambassador, I've seen myself growing in many ways. I hope to be able to use my knowledge of sustainability and agriculture to create sustainable building materials and grow my own garden to give back to the community throughout my life journey."

As we celebrate the accomplishments of our 2025-2026 cohort, we're grateful to partner with organizations like CRECE Urban Farms and are inspired by the young leaders who continue to demonstrate what a more sustainable future can look like.
